LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville is a foodie city boasting many locally owned restaurants and outstanding chefs. Unfortunately Louisville also deals with a gut wrenching reality - many people here go to bed hungry every day.
It is not just in Louisville, but throughout the region as one in five children in Clark and Floyd counties in Indiana go to bed hungry every night as well. This despite the fact that Dare to Care Food Bank distributed 13 million meals to those in need last year in their 13 county Kentuckiana service area.
Kentucky children under five years old have an alarming lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life. They rank near the bottom nationally in what is called food insecurity. A child who doesn't have enough to eat isn't going to do as well in school and is likely to get sick more often.
Dare to Care's Hunger Walk Sunday, September 15, at Waterfront Park will call attention to this challenge before us that can be met. Dare to Care says for every dollar donated they can provide four meals to local children, families and seniors in need.
If money is too tight, they can always use your help. We salute the more than 3,000 volunteers who help them fulfill their mission.
Help fill up our food pantries and keep them filled.
