AURORA, IN (FOX19) -

Three people were taken to the hospital following a late morning crash Thursday in Dearborn County.

According to Indiana State Police (ISP), 53-year-old Edward Smith, of Rising Sun, was driving eastbound on S.R. 56 when he drove his Chevrolet Monte Carlo completely left of center.

A Chrysler van, driven by Susan Blanton, 31, of Greendale, was headed westbound and reacted, swerving into the eastbound lane to try and avoid a collision. She was struck head on by the Monte Carlo.

It happened around 10 a.m. near the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club.

ISP says Smith's car went into a ditch as Blanton's van spun in the roadway and overturned onto its side.

Blanton was taken to Dearborn County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Smith was also taken there with non-life threatening injuries to his leg, foot and arm.

Smith's passenger, 48-year-old Tonya Smith, was trapped in the Monte Carlo after the crash. Authorities say it took fire and rescue units approximately 30 minutes to extricate her from the car.

She was taken to Dearborn County Hospital and later transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with serious injuries to her arm, head, chest and legs.

According to ISP, Edward Smith told officers the Monte Carlo had some kind of steering malfunction which caused his car to swerve out of control and cross the center line.

"Seat belt usage and air bags definitely reduced injuries suffered in the crash," said ISP Sergeant Matt Burkhardt.

The crash remains under investigation by Indiana State Police.
