Swanton banning donation bins

Posted: Updated:
SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Swanton community is working to clean up their parking lots and retail space, and say they plan to do it by banning donation dump sites.

Leaders say donation bins have turned into a dumping ground for trash. Instead of using them as intended, people are leaving things like broken lamps and computers and trash bags at the bins.

Swanton village employees say it's gotten so bad, they have to clean the area themselves once a week.

"The last time we had a backhoe, we had to pick [the trash] up and then take it to our street department for disposal," said Village Administrator Jon Gochenour. "It takes away from other things that we should be doing in the village."

The ban on the bins goes into effect at the end of the month. The village is encouraging charities to open shops where employees can monitor what's dropped off, and make sure parking lots don't end up as dumping grounds.
