LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man banned from a Shively Kroger for stealing returned to the store on Friday and assaulted two Louisville Metro Police officers and a senior citizen while trying to run from his latest theft from the store, according to an arrest report.

Police said Robert W. Smith Jr., 43, of Louisville stole beer, meats and books totaling $274.03 from the Kroger at 3917 7th Street Road Friday morning. When officers arrived on the scene, Smith disobeyed their direct order to stop. The officers said Smith knocked down a senior citizen while trying to get away, causing a back injury to the man. Two officers were injured while struggling with Smith in the parking lot where he was taken into custody, the arrest report states. The severity of the officers' injuries was not immediately clear.

While trying to flee, Smith also damaged a metal detector valued at more than $1,000, according to Louisville Metro Police.

Smith is charged with first degree robbery, fleeing or evading police, and two counts of third degree assault on a police officer.
