Students offered extended school hours

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Many Jefferson County Public School students ended their day later than usual on Monday as part of a district wide effort to boost student achievement.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays middle and high school students can extend their school DAY until 5 p.m. to receive help on their schoolwork.

Students are not required to participate and they do not have to commit to the extra hours.

Fairdale High School Principal Brad Weston said a smaller classroom setting and more one on one interaction with teachers can help students succeed, "Some of us learn a little faster. Some need some extra time, so if they have a need for extra time on some learning targets or some particular learning for that week, they can stay Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and get that extra time."

Principal Weston said district funding this year allowed them to provide students with a meal and bus transportation.

Eighteen schools are offering the extended hours.
