LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Soon a committee will start reviewing Camp Taylor fire chief candidates in and outside of the department.

This all comes after a lawsuit accused former Deputy Chief Steve Adkins of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment by two current Camp Taylor firefighters.

Board of Trustees Chairman Alan Lewis says since the allegations were made public, Adkins and his father, Harold Adkins, who was the current fire chief both retired on Friday.
Lewis says they were never encouraged by the board to step down.

"I can't thank enough of the Adkins, Harold and Steve, for their participation in this community and this department," said Lewis. "They had a long dedication of years in this department and a lot of great sacrifice to help this community."

Former board chairman, Gary Fields, also spoke saying he doesn't see this as retirement for the chief who has served Camp Taylor for decades.

"It's sad that he had to go out on this note because what happened with Steve, if the allegations were true, he would have been disciplined, but Harold had no involvement in this and he was taken out because of his name," said Fields.

Dave Stauble has already been named the new deputy chief.

The lawsuit will continue making its way through the court system. Both fire fighters involved are still working.
