A local gym has been credited with keeping many kids off the street by providing a positive outlet for their energy, but now the future of that community center may be in jeopardy.
For nearly seven years, Club Knockout has called a warehouse near Old Nashville Highway home.
But in the next 30 days, the youth boxing club will have to find a new home or go down for the count.
"It's a successful program, and we want to keep that going," said Sgt. Chip Davis, president of the La Vergne Fraternal Order of Police.
The owner of Crown Label Inc. also owns the 6,000-square-foot building next door that houses the boxing league and has made the business decision to lease out the space to a paying tenant in order to help his struggling company.
He told the FOP he could get about $3,000 in rent for the space, where Club Knockout has operated rent-free since 2006.
"With the economy doing a little bit better, we totally understand him needing to rent this space out," Davis said.
Club Knockout has not only saved hundreds of at-risk kids from the risk of joining gangs or other negative influences, but it has also helped them take what they've learned and apply it in everyday life.
"There are very strict rules to maintaining a certain grade point average at school and obeying the rules at home," Davis said.
Several other organizations also use the space in addition to the boxing league, and the FOP collects food and clothing donations there during the holiday season.
If you would like more information how to donate money to Club Knockout, call La Vergne FOP.
