LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Students and their parents woke up extra early Wednesday morning to attend a breakfast at Ascension School benefiting Blessings in a Backpack.

For three weeks students, the students of Ascension School were asked to bring in backpacks to give to Blessings in Backpack, a charity that fills the backpacks with food for needy children to have meals over the weekend during the school year.

Ascension aimed for 100 backpacks to be donated, but as they enjoyed a thank you breakfast at the school Wednesday, they realized the students had brought in more than 160.

"It's really exciting to watch their enthusiasm and their excitement," said Terry Mullaney, principal of Ascension.

69% of children in the U.S. are on free or reduced meal programs. Half of the proceeds from the breakfast will also go to Blessings in a Backpack.

"Our program is intended to feed them on the weekends," said Kevin Beam, chief operating officer of Blessings in a Backpack. "So when they leave on Friday and come back to school on Monday they've eaten and they've had nourishment and they're ready to continue their study."
