LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Seventeen indictments naming 70 people accused of an elaborate theft ring were returned by a Jefferson County Grand Jury on Thursday.
According to an investigation conducted by the Louisville Metro Police Department, the suspects would work together to steal merchandise from stores, then return to stores with the stolen items and receive either cash or gift cards in exchange for the merchandise.
Investigators said if the suspects received gift cards they would take them to businesses that buy gift cards and would get cash in exchange.
According to LMPD the cash the suspects received went to support their heroin addictions.
All 70 people named in the 17 indictments are scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
Investigators said more than 100 additional people have been identified in relation to the theft ring and charges against them will be forthcoming.
