LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Police are investigating the possibility that the same thief stole money from two Louisville restaurants after the business owners caught the crook on camera.

The man who stole several thousand dollars from Sal's Pizza in the East End is likely the same person who took $400 from Lil' Cheezers in the Highlands, police said.

The theft at Sal's came as the restaurant owner prepared to take the week's income from his restaurant office to the bank last Friday afternoon, then stepped away momentarily.

"(The thief) was in and out within a minute," said Jo Harp, the restaurant's operations manager, who was serving customers when the crime happened. "I can't believe how bold he was."

The restaurant's owner said he was working with his insurance company to get the several thousand dollars back.

Surveillance video in Sal's caught the thief, who wore a black Nike hat, locking himself in the office, taking the money and then walking past multiple cameras.

Cameras at Lil' Cheezers on Baxter Avenue captured a man matching the description from Sal's -- even wearing the same hat – walking in the front door and asking for the restrooms.

Video shows the thief walking to the back of the restaurant and then into the office, taking a bag with about $400.

"It irritates me that somebody's willing to walk in during the middle of the day and take your stuff and leave," owner Matt Davis said. "We work really hard for that."

Davis has instructed his employees to keep the office door locked, and even bought new locks for the door.

Davis said he thought the crime was likely possible because of "inside information" from a former employee, and said he didn't expect to get the money back.

"If he's doing this all over town, he's going to get caught, and he needs to get caught," Davis said. "And it's our responsibility since we have the proof (to show the video)."

At Sal's, the restaurant's owners are now making daily trips to the bank, ensuring there isn't much money in the eatery at any time.

"If they break in they're not going get anything -- just pizza," Harp said.

Two Metro police districts are working together on the case. If you have information, call (502) 574-LMPD.
