LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville man faces several charges after police say he took a walk in the middle of Interstate 65 early Sunday morning.

According to an arrest report, a Louisville Metro Police officer spotted Anthony D. Nicklas, 22, walking southbound in the center lane of northbound I-65 around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. The report states the officer tried to stop Nicklas by turning on emergency lights and sirens and calling to the man, but he started running. The officer pursued the man on foot, running across the busy interstate, placing the officer and the public in substantial danger of death or serious injury, according to the report.

Police said while evading the pursuing officer, Nicklas jumped in front of an oncoming van, forcing the driver to slam on the brakes and come to a complete stop.

Investigators said Nicklas was in an area prohibited by law. The interstate has signs located at each entrance ramp stating no pedestrian traffic is allowed, and fencing and concrete enclosures are used to prohibit pedestrian access.

Nicklas is charged with fleeing or evading police, wanton endangerment, obstructing a highway and disorderly conduct.
