WEST LINN, OR (KPTV) -

A step back in time was interrupted by a suspect accused of spending too much time at the saloon.

It was 1913 on Saturday in West Linn for the city's Living History Tour. People were dressed for the period, and that included police officers.

Two members of the West Linn police force were representing the local law from 100 years ago when a vehicle quite unlike the Roadsters and Locomobiles of 1913 crashed the party.

Investigators said the culprit, Dennis McCleery, 65, drove through the barriers into the historic West Linn area. An inquest into the incident led police to one conclusion.

He "smelled like a brewery," they said.

The police officers playing their part in the retelling of the past, Officers Mike Francis and Brad Moyle, called for their modern day colleagues to come make an arrest.

McCleery is charged with DUII. There are no reports of any harm done to those in attendance.

However, while many onlookers were there for this most serious situation, there are no moving pictures of the actual arrest.

Cell phones did not exist in 1913 and were not allowed for the reenactment participants.

Backlash and violence at times have been so severe, some police said it made them hesitate or even avoid some actions on the job. It's called the Ferguson effect - a reference to the Missouri town where an officer shot Michael Brown in 2014.
