Caretaker of dementia patient charged with abuse

Ashley Shipley, 25 Ashley Shipley, 25

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A live-in caretaker for a 74-year-old woman suffering from dementia and blindness was arrested for abusing her.

An arrest report states Ashley Shipley, 25, is accused of becoming "enraged at (the) victim after she spilled laundry detergent on the floor" on Monday afternoon. Police reported this caused Shipley to punch the victim in her face and body multiple times.

Emergency medical treatment was needed following the incident and the victim's injuries required a stay in the hospital, according to police. They also said because of her age, mental condition, blindness and other physical disability, it was impossible for her to defend herself against the assault.

According to the police, Shipley made threats to shoot the victim when "she gets out of jail."

Shipley was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of knowingly abusing an adult and a misdemeanor charge for terroristic threatening.
