Federal fund awarded to trial to prevent hand transplant rejection

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A clinical trial of a new treatment to help prevent rejection in hand transplant patients will be held in Louisville.

The trial is possible after $850,000 in federal funding was awarded to Louisville Vascularized Composite Allograft program as part of the research program of the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

The trial, led by primary investigator Doctor Joseph Kutz, of Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center, with Jewish Hospital, Christine M. Kleinert Institute and University of Louisville will use cell-based therapy to reduce hand transplant rejection.

The group developed the pioneering hand transplant procedure and has performed nine hand transplants since 1999.
