Federal fund awarded to trial to prevent hand transplant rejection

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A clinicaltrial of a new treatment to help prevent rejection in hand transplant patientswill be held in Louisville.

The trial is possible after $850,000 infederal funding was awarded to Louisville Vascularized CompositeAllograft programas part of the research program of the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

Thetrial, led by primary investigator Doctor Joseph Kutz, of Kleinert Kutz Hand CareCenter, with Jewish Hospital, Christine M. Kleinert Institute andUniversity of Louisville will use cell-based therapy to reduce hand transplantrejection.

The group developed the pioneeringhand transplant procedure and has performed nine hand transplants since 1999.
