LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The first September meet in more than 100 years is winding down at Churchill Downs.

Saturday night marked the final "Downs After Dark" until November. Churchill Downs officials said the last time the track hosted a September meet, it was the 1890s.

Racing fan Lou Oechslin has been coming to the track for over 75 years and still remembers his first race.  "I came with my cousin to the Derby in 1937, War Admiral won it," he recalls.  He said coming to the track never gets old.

Other racing fans agree.  Fan Tony Ellis said, "Every time I come, it's the scene, it's the crowd. It's fun to be out here."

"It's just a rush," said Chris Truman.

Oechslin said watching races at the track has been rewarding. "I've had good days and I've had bad days and the best day I ever had I won $40,000 dollars," he said.  He has plans to return in the years to come.

Churchill Downs officials said 2013 is historic because it is the first time in history that three race meetings have been held at Churchill Downs in a calendar year.
