Signup for Affordable Care Act nears

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The president's landmark health care act is slated to open up to millions of Americans this week.

Health insurance marketplaces in Kentucky, Indiana and the rest of the nation will be open to millions of Americans on Tuesday. That is, of course, if the U.S. Senate rejects a bill passed by the House which would delay the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for a year.

Kentuckians will have open enrollment through the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange online at In Indiana, the marketplace is run through the federal government and its web site,

Susan Dunlap is with Kentucky Health Cooperative, one of the providers in Kentucky. She said people should take advantage of the online guides to insurance policies because they can provide useful, in-depth information.

Online resources include "who the carriers are, what the costs are, who the providers are on those networks, what the drug lists are and all kinds of useful information like that," said Dunlap.

A massive push is underway to educate the public about their options. The open enrollment period runs through the end of the year. The enrollment process is different in Kentucky and Indiana but the states are home to more than a million uninsured people combined. Those who are uninsured will need to enroll or will face penalties next year when the policies go into effect on January 1.

Premiums will be as low as $47 per month and can go up to more than $700 per month for a family of four. Governor Steve Beshear said with Kentucky being amongst the worst in health care rankings, "we can't implement the Affordable Care Act fast enough." He said 640,000 uninsured Kentuckians will be able to get new coverage.
