PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Nanette Cornelius couldn't have been more excited as she made her way to Lake Pleasant.

A month ago, she and her dog Peaty almost drowned near the Castle Hot Springs boat ramp. Monday night, she finally got to meet the man who saved their lives. Standing near the water's edge, she embraced her hero.

"Thank you very, very much! Thank you so much," said Cornelius.

Steve Stephenson said he was camping with his little boy like he does just about every weekend. That night, he said he woke up to what he thought with his son screaming.

"I reached over and tried to make sure he was alright. I grabbed my flashlight, opened up the tent and shined the flashlight over towards the dock. I could see something in the water," said Stephenson.

Stephenson said he was in a daze as he ran from the campsite over to the pier.

"I got down on one knee and grabbed onto the dog's collar. I told her (to) push him up again and she pushed him. I held onto him and dragged him over this edge," said Stephenson.

By that time, another gentleman had heard what was happening and helped Stephenson pull Cornelius onto the dock. She now refers to the men as her guardian angels.

"I've never really been an angel before," said Stephenson.

"I'm grateful I got to thank him. I didn't thank it would happen," said Cornelius.
