JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) – An armed man outside of the Clark County Courthouse is arrested after police said he surrendered peacefully.
According to Jeffersonville police, Henry Campbell, 63, of Sellersburg, prompted the courthouse and nearby businesses to go on lockdown for a brief period of time after he was believed to be pointing a shotgun at the building.
For about an hour the Clark County Courthouse was on lockdown Tuesday afternoon. People inside like Linda Mitchell, didn't know what to think.
"Just not knowing what is going on scares you, especially at a courthouse," said Mitchell.
She was on the second floor and around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday they had everybody move away from the windows.
"That was scary, when they tell you to get to the center of the building, you know its something going on the outside and they don't want you to be in trouble," said Mitchell.
Outside along Watt street on the west side of the building, police say a witness saw Campbell pointing a shotgun at the courthouse.
"We didn't know what this person's intent was. We wanted to take all precautions so we activated our negotiating team and our SWAT team," said Detective Todd Hollis, Jeffersonville Police.
Before the teams could get in place, police say Campbell surrendered. He stepped out of his truck unarmed with his hands in the air. Roger Hardy, the IT manager for the courthouse, captured video of Campbell's arrest.
Officers recovered a loaded shotgun from the front seat and they say Campbell had plenty of ammunition in his pocket. A scary sight, as he was parked just outside in range of several county offices.
"We intend to do a full and complete investigation to make sure if this man did have any specific issue or target that we identify what that is, in order to protect those people or whoever it is that he might have an issue with," said Hollis.
Campbell does not have a criminal history. WAVE 3 News uncovered one traffic violation and one citation for not having a valid fishing license.
No one was injured during the incident. Campbell is charged with pointing a firearm, criminal recklessness and intimidation. He is being held on a $25,000 full cash bond.
