GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

More than 400 civilian employees who were on furlough at Luke Air Force Base have been told to report back to work on Monday.

The workers received notice on Sunday that they have been recalled, said Luke Air Force Base spokesman Capt. Tristan Hinderliter.

When the workers were first furloughed, Brig. Gen. Michael Rothstein said the feeling on base was one of frustration.

"That creates obvious hardship for those workers and their families. They are not getting paid.  They are in a non-work, non-pay status, and we don't know how long that is going to continue," Rothstein said.

Many of the 412 furloughed employees protested the government shutdown and set up an informational picket at the base Wednesday morning. AFGE Local 1547 represents civilian employees at Luke.

The absence of those employees was immediately evident across the base.

Rothstein said the base has kept the core part of its mission going. He said flying operations have continued.

At Fort Huachuca, all civilian employees of the U.S. Army Garrison are recalled for their normal duty day on Monday, according to the base's Facebook page.

All other civilian employees should check with their supervisor for further guidance.
