Police said on November 5, 2011 Bruner picked up Escareno and gave her a ride. Investigators say the two got in a fight in the car and Bruner stabbed Escareno.

Escareno jumped out while it was still moving. She was discovered alive by a passerby on Mount Eden Road. Bruner was taken into custody 10 days later.

Doctors said Escareno will not recover mental awareness. Bruner is scheduled to be sentenced on October 23.
