Girl dies after jumping from moving vehicle

JACKSON COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - A 17-year-old Jennings County girl died Saturday after jumping from a moving vehicle in Jackson County, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

According to a news release from the law enforcement agency, Laikyn Field, 17, of rural North Vernon, jumped from a 2008 Dodge Caravan sometime before 4 p.m. Saturday.

The news release said the car was traveling about 30 miles-per-hour eastbound on CR 700 N when the girl became upset and leaped from the rear passenger's side of the vehicle. The girl's stepfather, Jason Bowerly, was driving. The girl's mother was also inside the vehicle.

The girl was transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, IN. She was then airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She died from her injuries later that day, according to an update from the sheriff's department.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the incident.
