NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - A New Albany police officer fired nearly a year ago after the agency's chief decided mental health issues made him unfit for his job has been reinstated by the police merit board, according to a report on the website of the News and Tribune, a media partner of WAVE 3 News.

Chief Sherri Knight said Philip Houchin, 33, presents potential risks as an officer if he is not medicated.

Documents obtained by the News and Tribune detail a mental health evaluation Houchin underwent. They reveal he was diagnosed with a disorder that makes him prone to violent outbursts.
