Many northern Arizona residents are preparing as a winter storm is expected to push through the area Thursday.
A winter weather advisory has been issued for Coconino County until noon Thursday.
A cold front pushed into the Flagstaff area with rain quickly changing to snow. Snow levels continued to drop to 6,000 feet Thursday morning with the heaviest snow expected between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Two to 4 inches of snow is expected for areas above 6,500 feet over the Western Mogollon Rim with 4 to 6 inches over Kaibab Plateau.
ADOT recommends drivers heading to Arizona's high country on Thursday be prepared for winter driving conditions.
Slow down, be patient and drive safely. Plan for extra travel time.
Be alert: ice forms on bridges first and is hard to see.
When driving behind a snowplow, stay back at least a few car lengths until it's safe to pass or until the plow pulls off the road. If you think you're traveling too close to a plow, you probably are. Be safe and stay back!
Notify someone of your travel route, destination and projected arrival time.
Carry an emergency preparedness kit in your vehicle that includes blankets, extra clothes, a flashlight, an ice scraper, a shovel, sand for traction, a fully charged cell phone and hazard warning lights or reflectors.
Brake slowly to avoid any panic braking or jerking the steering wheel.
Increase the distance between you and the traffic ahead.
Carry plenty of food and water and all necessary medications.
Carry tire chains, snow cables or snow tires.
Wear warm clothes to protect you during extended time periods in cold temperatures.
The early arrival of winter conditions has prompted Flagstaff police, along with the Salvation Army, to get blankets and motel vouchers for the homeless.
Police officers will be handing out the blankets and vouchers, but Flagstaff police say supplies are limited. Click here to reach Flagstaff police for more details.
Meanwhile, many parts of the central and west Valley got rain Thursday morning.
