Sunpower solar company accidentally releases customers' information
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
One solar power company is apologizing after accidentally releasing dozens of customers' names and home addresses. California-based SunPower released that information in an email to one of their customers.
"It was the last straw for me," said Douglas Kellock, who lives in Anthem. While dealing with a billing problem, Kellock received an email about a past due amount. But instead of just containing his information, 67 other customers' information was included. Sixteen of those people are here in Arizona.
"All my information is now opened up to anybody. I have no clue who got that information," said Kellock.
The released customers' information stretched from coast to coast. CBS 5 reached out to some customers in Arizona.
"I don't know what's out there. Maybe it's a good thing I've got [identity theft protection]," said John Riederer. Riederer lives in Sun City and is one of the customers whose information was released.
"This is the first thing that's ever happened to me, as far as any personal information going out into the public," he said.
Riederer said he's not surprised by the breach since he's also had billing problems with SunPower in the past.
"[This is] typical. I have no respect for this company whatsoever. And I've been asked by people to recommend one, and I'm not recommending anybody at this point," he said.
Helen Kendrick, a spokeswoman for SunPower, released the following statement:
"SunPower deeply regrets the unauthorized communication sent out via email by our vendor.
"Our vendor has already taken corrective actions to ensure this doesn't happen again. Additionally, we are fully investigating the situation to ensure that all our customers are safeguarded. No financial information, such as credit card or bank account numbers, was revealed as part of this communication.
"We are contacting the affected customers to explain the situation and to offer our sincerest apologies."
