It's a simple test that's more reliable than a mammogram and could save your life.
The detect diagnostic test can find breast cancer before a mammogram, and it's as easy as a simple blood test.
Jean Deffner is vigilant about screening for breast cancer. The 44-year-old mother of two says it runs in her family.
"My mom's aunt actually had breast cancer at an early age, and I have had mammograms and they said that I have fibrocystic breast disease," Deffner said.
Deffner is the perfect candidate for the detect diagnostic breast test. The test includes a simple blood test that detects cancer even before a mammogram.
"I think it's awesome because when you look at mammography it has its limitations," said Dr. Angela DeRosa from DeRosa Medical.
DeRosa said the detect diagnostic test isn't meant to replace mammograms, but rather to compliment each other.
A mammogram detects images already formed, while the blood test looks for inflammatory and tumor markers in the blood stream, signaling a tumor is starting to grow.
"That combination of mammography plus the blood test can almost bring the accuracy of being able to tell a patient you don't have cancer to 100 percent," DeRosa said.
The blood test is recommended for all women between the ages of 35 to 50, and women with a personal or family history of breast cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, abnormal mammograms or women who are on hormone therapy.
"This gives me another tool where I can now safely sleep at night saying, you know, I've done everything I can to protect that woman from developing breast cancer because, as you know, if we catch it early, we can cure it," DeRosa said.
Deffner hopes the test will give her peace of mind.
"A feeling that everything is OK, that I don't have to worry about anything or get me prepared for making a plan for the future," Deffner said.
Test results come back within a week to 10 days.
Many insurances cover the detect diagnostic breast test. The test costs around $90 out-of-pocket.
