It's finally fall! The leaves are changing and it's time to break out the sweaters! With the cooler air, it's also time to take some time to cool off before the holiday rush! I recently took a short drive to the popular Gatlinburg, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. You can take the girl out of the foodie city, (Louisville) but you can't take the foodie out of the girl! If you're looking for a quick getaway, don't miss out on my favorite spots! It turns out The Smokies have something for everyone in your family!
For the breakfast lover…
Gatlinburg has its fair share of pancake places but one reigns supreme. The Pancake Pantry is the best and it's no secret. Don't fear the huge line of people waiting to get in, it moves quickly. I have a huge sweet tooth so I always get the Swiss Chocolate Chip Pancakes. The dish is a dream for any chocoholic. My sister highly recommends the Sugar ‘N Spice Pancakes. Click here to visit their website for all the pancake creations.
For the Wine-o…
Bootleggers Home Made Wine is one of my favorite spots. People often miss it because they go straight back to Ole Smoky Moonshine, but the two are right next to each other. I love a good glass of wine, especially if it's sweet. I'm not normally a red wine drinker but the Homegrown Blackberry Wine is wonderful. My absolute favorite is the Mountain Muscat (not found online). Make sure you visit and sample for yourself. WARNING: The wax is extremely hard to get off but it's worth it.
For the adventurer…
I never thought I would try moonshine but hey, when in Rome. It turns out I love the legal version of the illegal drink. Make sure you brave the crowd and stop by Ole Smoky Moonshine next time your in the mountains. You can sample all of their flavors with a helpful guide. My personal favorite is Lemon Drop because it's super tasty! Beware of White Lightning if you have a weak stomach! It's not for the faint of heart.
For the movie buff…
Even if you don't love seafood, Bubba Gump Shrimp could be the place for you. This chain has many locations, but there are none in the bluegrass (Even though they have a Kentucky Bourbon-themed dish). I personally love the stuffed shrimp, it's seafood heaven! While the food is great, the best part of this restaurant is the atmosphere. Everything is based on the classic movie Forrest Gump. You may want to brush up on your Forrest Gump knowledge, they WILL quiz you. Tip: A lot of the answers to your waiter's trivia questions are hanging up in the restaurant.
For the homebody...
You don't have to go out every night to enjoy your vacation. Some of my favorite meals were made in our home away from home for the weekend. Many cabins and chalets come equipped for cooking. The best meals of your break could be shared at a quiet table with your family.
