JEFFERSONTOWN, KY (WAVE) - A streetscape enhancement project is underway in Jeffersontown's historic Gaslight Square District.

Several local officials as well as Kentucky Representative Steve Riggs and Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf announced the $3,000,000 project and broke ground on construction Monday afternoon.

The project will improve and upgrade the Taylorsville Road Corridor from College Drive to Ruckriegel Parkway.

"As the saying goes, build it and they shall come," said Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf. "We are building this and asking for businesses to come; we're asking for customers to come. We're improving for the future."

Mayor Dieruf added he found inspiration for the project from Thomas Jefferson's vision at Monticello.

In a press release, Matt Meunier, Director of Community Development, said the importance of downtown areas has long been recognized as the heartbeat of a community. He believes attracting new investments to the "town center" is important to the economic success of the city and building upon the heritage of Jeffersontown will enhance the quality of life enjoyed by its citizens.
