Meade Co. community prepares to open Kentucky's largest tornado safe room

MULDRAUGH, KY (WAVE) - The Meade County community of Muldraugh will unveil the largest-capacity community safe room in Kentucky during a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday afternoon.

According to a press release from the city of Muldraugh, the 6,084 square feet of space located at 205 South Main Street will be used to protect citizens from severe weather events and can withstand winds up to 250 miles per hour.

The concept for the community safe room was initiated in 2006 by former Mayor Danny Tate who saw the need to protect residents from the threat of tornadoes because three mobile home communities are within the city limits and the majority of homes in Muldraugh do not have basements.

The safe room was funded by a $1.2 million grant through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
