WAVE 3 News Editorial - October 24, 2013: Gerrymandering

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Members of Congress collectively have an approval rating approaching single digits, yet 90 percent of them will be reelected, even though recent polls show more than half of us want incumbents replaced.

Seems counterintuitive but it is reality.

The reality is caused by gerrymandering – redrawing Congressional district lines to find friendly voters. House of Representative members belong to districts that look pretty peculiar on a map because they've been drawn out that way to essentially insure the incumbent gets re-elected. Representatives select their voters, rather than voters selecting their representatives.

House members will continue to win when the party has the ability to choose only certain sections of a county or include or exclude neighborhoods where a candidate or an opponent may live.

Until we change this, we won't change the gridlock that has once again led us to a countdown clock for the next potential government shutdown in three months.

Setting term limits would be another way to change this if we don't stop gerrymandering.

But we have to do something pro-active or our government will continue to malfunction.
