Downtown Crossing construction on schedule as concrete pour continues

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - Even those who live through daily construction had to stop and snap a photo of the constant fleet of cement trucks rolling by on Riverside Drive.

Below the Kennedy Bridge, the future site of I-65 is rising above the banks as crews poured cement for more than 8 hours Saturday forming the base for Tower 5.

"This is another significant moment. This is the first mass concrete pour for the Downtown Crossing," said Mindy Peterson, a spokesperson with the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Crews created a foundation for Tower 5 Saturday. Peterson explained why Tower 5 is pivotal in the construction of the cable-stayed bridge.

"There are a total of nine piers for the Downtown Crossing. We have five of those piers in the water. Of those five, three are tower supports which means when you take a look at that new cable bridge, these are the large towers supporting the bridge," Peterson said.

Walsh Construction is leading the design and construction of the Downtown Crossing.

The Downtown crossing is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
