LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The driver of a car stopped by Louisville Metro Police for racing another car is facing much more serious charges after what officers found inside the vehicle.

An arrest report states the traffic stop was made at Dixie Highway and W. Oak Street around 2:50 a.m. October 29 after the officer saw the car involved in a race on S. 13th Street. The report says the car ran the light at 13th and Hill and drove into oncoming traffic to pass another vehicle.

After the car was stopped, the officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and saw the butt of a handgun under the passenger seat. The driver, James E. Davis, 23, of Louisville, told police the gun was his and that he didn't have a concealed carry permit for the weapon.

In the driver's side door pocket, officers found four baggies of marijuana and three baggies of cocaine that were packaged for sale.

Davis was arrested on charges of trafficking in a controlled substance, trafficking in marijuana, carrying a concealed weapon, racing a motor vehicle on a public roadway and reckless driving. He will face a judge for arraignment October 30.
