State officials surveyed the ocean by air and jet ski Friday and spotted a large shark in the water at about 7:50 a.m. The shark eventually left the area, and DLNR officials decided to reopen the beach at noon.
Maui County officials say a shark attacked a kite surfer in waters off Kanaha Beach Park Thursday afternoon.
County of Maui Communications Director Rod Antone says the victim, a man in his 40's, was kite surfing about a 100 yards from Ka'a point when he was attacked.
According to the witness, the victim had fallen into the water, when he was bitten while hanging on to his board. The incident happened around 3:20 p.m.
Antone says the shark bit the man on his right leg near his calf, however he managed to make it to shore own his own.
The man, who is a tourist, was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition..
County Ocean Safety lifeguards went out on jetskis and saw a tiger shark estimated at 12 to 15 feet in the water.
The beach is closed a mile in either direction, from Papa Ula Point off Stable Road to Pier 1 at Kahului Harbor.
Shark warning signs are being posted by DLNR aquatic resources and enforcement staff, and County lifeguards.
Per the state shark incident response protocol, the beach area will remain closed overnight and in the morning, an assessment will be done. If there is no further sighting of a shark the beach will reopen at noon.
