TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
The Pima Animal Care Center may soon have a temporary solution for its overcrowding shelter.
The Board of Supervisors Tuesday will discuss allocating more than $400,000 to the center to help fund a tent adjacent to the shelter that would house more pets.
The tent would have space heaters and evaporative cooling units to be used for all seasonal changes.
Officials said $242,000 of the requested funds would also pay for additional staffing.
The shelter continues to overcrowd because its staff is working to reduce euthanasia, according to a PACC news release.
Approximately 49 percent of the animals that entered the shelter in the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2011-2012 left the shelter alive. This year, that number raised to 72 percent. Shelter officials said this is because they have kept animals longer, put more than the optimal number of them in kennels and encouraged the community to adopt them.
The center has a standing request in a future bond package for a $22 million facility improvement. Shelter officials said the facility housed a much smaller number of animals when it was built 50 years ago.
The discussion of a bond election has been pushed back at least one year.
