Families of fallen soldiers honored at Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Families of fallen soldiers were honored at Churchill Downs during Survivors Day at the Races Sunday.

Churchill Downs welcomed families across nine states to the track's Millionaires Row. Surviving family members of military service members who have given their lives in defense of our nation spent the afternoon with dignitaries like Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden.

It was a salute to sons who've lost their father like Zack Hamby.

"It shows there are people who actually recognize and care. I think it's a great opportunity. It's great they're honoring families and people who've lost somebody they've loved.," Hamby said.

There was also a race named in honor of the Survivors of Fallen Military Heroes. Family members were randomly selected to present the trophy to the winning jockey and owners.

"This is about the folks who've lost loved ones in combat. The folks who've paid the ultimate sacrifice. So today we're bringing those folks together, the families and spouses. This event is for them. This is an opportunity to recognize that sacrifice and what we can do to help them,"  1st Lt. Joshua Witt said.

More than 600 Kentucky service members have died in the defense of our nation since 9/11.
