Heroes get their new homes

A trio of Valley heroes are getting the keys to their brand new homes.

Meritage Homes is awarding three of its homes though Operation Homefront's Homes on the Homefront program. It selects veterans in need of a better place to live. This is the first time the organization has provided newly built homes where recipients will be the first owners.

Today's event is to celebrate the Neider family. Army Sergeant Richard Neider II, along with his wife and two children, are moving into their first home. It's a 2,278-square-foot, one-story home in Goodyear. The house includes some ADA-friendly features such as wider doors, roll in showers, roll under sinks and lower light switches that will allow Neider to use his wheelchair inside their home.

Monday morning's ceremony included a welcome home barbecue hosted by the Neiders' new neighbors, so that everyone could have a chance to honor the men and women of the armed forces.
