Repeat DUI offender faces several charges after injury accident

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A repeat drunk driver was arrested Monday and charged with several crimes, including another DUI offense.

Francis Arron Tongate, 66, of Louisville caused a motor vehicle crash on Dixie Highway that injured another driver around 6:30 Monday night, according to Louisville Metro police. Witnesses said Tongate rear-ended another vehicle and then ran the Mercury Grand Marquis he was driving into a ditch before running toward a neighborhood to hide. A witness caught up with Tongate and waited with him until police arrived.

Officers said Tongate had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and was able to complete only a small portion of a field sobriety test. Tongate admitting having two drinks and told officers the car belonged to his brother. When police checked the vehicle's tags, they discovered they were assigned to a Chevrolet owned by a woman. Police said the tags on that vehicle were canceled and replaced.

The arrest report states an officer checked the VIN on the suspect's vehicle and discovered the tags assigned to it expired in August 2012. They were last registered to Tongate. Police found no evidence the vehicle was insured.

The driver in the car that was hit suffered leg and hip injures and was taken to a hospital. Tongate suffered small lacerations on his right knee, but he refused treatment on the scene.

Records showed Tongate's operator's license was suspended for previous DUIs and that he has outstanding warrants for similar charges.

Tongate is charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of an accident and 2nd degree assault.
