LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A hip new hotel will land on the corner of Main Street and 1st Street.

aLOFT Hotel, owned by the Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, has been brought in by Developer Steve Poe of Poe Companies.

"It's funky, it's hip, it's cool, and it's upscale," Poe said.

The eight story boutique hotel will be the first Starwood hotel in downtown Louisville. Located across from whiskey row it will have 175 rooms, meeting areas and their token W XYZ bar.

"It's going to be green. It will be the first LEED certified, it will be the first green hotel in the city," Poe said. "We think the aLOFT brand perfectly fits here in the main and east market street corridor."

Mayor Greg Fischer was also at the press conference where it was announced Wednesday.

"When you think about all the fantastic projects that are starting to happen downtown it really just adds to this fantastic stew we have here," Mayor Fischer said.

The location was chosen for many reasons, one being parking

"We're going to park our guests at this city garage next door. Our guests are going to pay the city to park there every night," Poe said. "That's going to increase the income stream for that garage, increase the value of that garage."

Another reason was the proximity of the hotel to Waterfront Park.

"The Starwood guest is a sophisticated upscale traveler. They're also health conscious," Poe said. "I think they're going to be very excited that they can walk two blocks away and be in the top 10 urban blocks in the world."

The W, St. Regis, Sheraton and Westin hotels are also in the Starwood Group.

The hotel being close to the KFC Yum! Center, museums and restaurants were other reasons for picking 1st and Main.
