TARC soliciting opinions on new fare collection system
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - TARC will hold eight public meetings in November to solicit opinions on a new fare collection system scheduled to debut next summer.
The new system will allow bus passengers to pay for their rides with the tap of a smartcard when the board. TARC officials said fares will not increase and cash will remain a payment option.
Smartcard payments will replace paper tickets, passes and transfer slips which will be discontinued. Free transfer trips will remain available with smartcards but will be discontinued with cash fares because drivers will no longer distribute paper transfer slips.
Passes purchased on smartcards will provide unlimited rides for a specific period of time beginning with the first use of the pass to pay a fare. Currently, paper passes provide rides only on a specific day or during a specific month. TARC plans to begin offering 7-day passes in addition to 24-hour and 30-day passes with the new system.
TARC3 paratransit vehicles will not be part of the initial system but are expected to be phased in at a later date.
Details about the new plan, including a draft fare policy that will govern the new system, are available at ridetarc.org. TARC officials said comments will be carefully reviewed and taken into consideration by the TARC Board of Directors before the collection system decisions are finalized.
