LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A heartbroken couple who says they were victims of a man accused of conning people out of reward money, got the happy ending they had been searching for.

They scoured the city posting flyers everywhere and say the homecoming that happened in Germantown, should give hope to anyone searching for a lost pet.

Erin Clark was overcome with emotion after getting her dog Derby back. He was missing for nine and a half weeks. She and her husband Scott can't have children so their dogs are like their kids. They were exactly the kind of people Darrell Willis was looking for.

The Clark's said Willis preyed on people who'd offered rewards for their dogs by selling them false information. After the story aired, the search for Derby continued, until a couple found derby behind Mellwood Arts Center, more than three miles away.

Scott said this couple didn't want reward money, just to see derby home.

"And it probably took him a good 10 to 15 seconds to realize it was me," Scott said. "But then once he did he started crying and jumped all over me, and started kissing me and wagging his tail, and then we got him back."

"I can't believe it," a tearful Erin said.

The Clark's are now raising money to help in the search and return of other lost dogs like Derby. To donate go to paypal and click on send money. Send money teamderbydogrescuers@gmail.com and type in how much you want to send. The Clark's said the money will go to buying humane traps similar to the one used to catch Derby.
