LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's not your grandparent's public health anymore!
The average American lives thirty years longer than one hundred years ago thanks to public health efforts like vaccinations, the continued clean up of our air and water and better nutrition and care for infants. Now in the 21st Century, there's a renewed emphasis on policies that make us all healthier.
For example, smoking rates in Louisville have been going down since we passed a comprehensive Smoke Free ordinance in 2007. And our indoor air is better. We all breathe easier. Scientific analysis has documented the removal of toxins from the air found in restaurants, bars and work places. And we continue to make smoking cessation classes available to those still addicted to nicotine.
Preventing disease and maintaining good health is easier when the entire community is surrounded by environments where the healthy choice is the easy choice.
It's the job of public health to make sure that we all have the best chance to lead a long and healthy life. That's what we're doing at Metro Public Health and Wellness.
