LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A world class resource for families struggling with diabetes opened in downtown Louisville.

Tuesday morning a ribbon was cut outside of the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center inside of Kosair Children's Hospital.

Wendy Novak, the wife of Yum Brands CEO David Novak, was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 8 years old. The Novak's foundation Lift A Life donated $5 million to make the center possible.

Type one diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas produce little or no insulin and is typically diagnosed in children and young adults.
