LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man who said he was trying to help a friend get out of a domestic problem was stabbed.

According to a police report, on November 13 after 10 p.m. the victim went to a home on Hartlage Court in the Shively neighborhood of Louisville to pick up his friend who texted him and said she was having a fight with her boyfriend and needed to leave.

The girl's boyfriend, Derek Mikel, 25, saw she texted the victim and began sending him messages telling him to stay away from the house, police said.

The victim told officers he picked up another friend and went to the house.

When he got there, police reported Mikel came out of the home to confront him and an argument ensued. The arrest report indicates the suspect pulled out a hunting knife and stabbed the victim once in his abdomen, causing a deep wound.

The victim was able to get back in the car and was taken to University Hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a punctured liver, according to police.

Mikel was identified as the one who stabbed the victim. He was arrested and charged with first degree assault.
