Snow covering the ground in 1994.
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Prepare to bundle up! Signs are indicating we are in for a colder and snowier winter than in recent years.
One way we can predict what's coming is by looking back using the science of analogs, looking at past patterns that are similar to the present. On that basis the upcoming 2013-2014 winter might look a lot like the winter weather we saw in 1993-1994.
Remember that? We set a record for Louisville's biggest one day snowfall with more than 15 inches and an all-time record low temperature 22 degrees below zero.
The events that led up to that look a lot like what we've seen recently. A cool springtime, rain on Derby day, a mild summer, an early autumn snow and severe weather warnings in November.
Another reliable science for predicting winter weather has to do with thunderstorms on the other side of the Earth near India.
If we see the storms develop over the Indian Ocean near the equator that suggests a cold winter is on its way to us. If the storms develop to the north over land it points to a warmer winter. Right now, that test indicates more rain than snow for the winter ahead.
And then there's folklore. It's not as scientific, but often very accurate. One popular theory is that when the autumn leaves fall late the winter will be harsh. And guess what? Some leaves are still lingering.
Is heavy snow next? Looking at the signs it seems more likely than not.
