Principal cleared in Pappy thefts

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A high school principal authorities said was a person of interest after thousands of dollars worth of liquor bottles were stolen from a distillery has been cleared.

According to Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton, investigators have interviewed more than 100 people after more than 200 bottles of the prized bourbon were stolen from the Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfort on October 15.

On Friday Sheriff Melton said Bardstown High School principal Chris Pickett was no longer a suspect.

Pickett  became a person of interest in the case after the Franklin County Sheriff's office released security tape from an Elizabethtown liquor store, of a man store owners said tried to sell them cases of Pappy Van Winkle 20 year bourbon.

The bottles retail for $120, but can be sold for nearly ten times that price in auction.

No arrests have been made in the case, but Melton said they are continuing to investigate and conduct interviews.
