GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) -

Officials with the city say the City of Gastonia and Optimist Club celebrated the grand opening of a new park.

Phase one of the Gastonia Optimist Club Park opened Saturday and is located on Vance Street in west Gastonia.

The Optimist Club donated the land while the city provided the planning and manpower to build the park.

"This park is a special reminder of what we can do as a City and a community when we all pitch in to do what we can to make Gastonia the great place that we know it is," said Mayor John Bridgeman.

Officials say phase one of the park includes playground equipment (With a special area for toddlers), climbing rocks, butterfly garden, picnic tables, and a seating area.

Phase two is still underway and will have a trail connecting the park to the west Gastonia Boys and Girls Club property.
