Man arrested for passing out over steering wheel of SUV stopped at light

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Early Sunday morning, police were called to check out a SUV sitting at a traffic light and not moving.

An officer got to the scene just before 3 a.m. at the intersection of Interstate 264 West and 3rd Street in south Louisville and found Shyrone Hamblen, 36, slumped over the steering wheel of a Lincoln Navigator, passed out.

According to an arrest report, the suspect did not respond to several attempts to wake him up made by the officer. When Hamblen began to come to, he let his foot off the brake causing the vehicle to almost hit the officer as it moved into oncoming traffic, police said.

The policeman began striking the SUV's window with his flash light to break the glass in an attempt to get inside and put it into park. Police said the Navigator continued through the intersection and up onto a curb before stopping.

The report indicates the suspect eventually unlocked his door and got out of the passenger side of the vehicle.

Police said Hamblen smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech and glassy eyes, and was staggering. Because of the circumstances of the accident, the officer was not able to give the suspect a field sobriety test.

Hamblen was arrested and charged with first degree wanton endangerment and DUI, first offense.
