LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Sara Sexton's plea by email to Pass the Cash to a single mother of five was both heart-breaking and uplifting. Her story involved renewed faith, a friendship formed and a struggle that no parent should have to fight.

"I had the pleasure of taking care of Erika's baby little Alana. Alana was 5 months old. I took care of her pretty much from birth up until five months old," said Sara.

For every day of little Alana's life her mom cared for her, fought for her and struggled herself to survive.

Sara said, "While the baby was in the hospital she lost her job. I saw her struggle in a way where if something happened she couldn't just jump in her car. She'd have to wait and catch a bus or catch a ride. So I've seen her struggle in a way - she didn't have as much as other people had."

Five months formed a friendship and changed two lives.

"I care about her. She's helped me in ways she doesn't even know. In ways that she'll never know. In ways that I can't repay her," Sara explained.

Erika's help came to Sara by way of example and changed Sara's view of the world. Now Sara wanted to help change what she could for Erika - that's were we could help.

As we passed the cash there were not many words at first, but there did need to be.

"It's gonna pay my bills and get my kids Christmas - everything," Erika said of the money.

We know what  money can do,  but we also know what it can't do. Just two weeks ago Erika buried little Alana.

"She lived for 5 months and 11 days and it was the most precious 5 months and 11 days ever," she said of her daughter.

We cannot heal the heartache, but with love and support maybe we can help pick up the pieces of the life she has now.
