Cab driver arrested for allegedly pulling gun on customer

Cab rides can be costly depending on where you're headed. A ride to a restaurant sounds routine enough, but it's what happened next that landed a cabbie in handcuffs.

City Cab Company workers boast about reasonable rates in a YouTube video, but a Murfreesboro man is claiming one of its drivers tried to overcharge him.

On Tuesday, Thomas Cross, 26, called for a cab from his Ashwood Cove Apartment, needing a ride to Krystal.

According to Cross, the driver, Stephen Brown, 29, told him the cab fare would be $20. Cross says he told him he's never paid that much, and wasn't going to.

The cabbie demanded an $8 cancellation fee; Cross refused, and got out.

"He heard the cab driver squeal the tires on the car, and exit the vehicle," said Murfreesboro police spokesperson Officer Amy Norville. "They exchanged words about the money, and he alleges the cab driver pulled a gun on him, and threatened him, and threatened to call the police."

Cross told police he ran and knocked on a stranger's door to get away from the cab driver.

According to a police incident report, Thomas told Cross, "It's OK, I know where you live."

He said that statement also put him in fear so he ended called police instead.

Officers later caught up with the cab driver at the hotel on John Rice Boulevard where he is staying.

"They questioned him and he denied having a gun, and denied making any kind of threat," Norville said.

But he gave consent to search the room, and officers found a Glock 23 handgun in a gun safe.

Brown was arrested for aggravated assault.

"Anytime a gun is introduced into a situation, it does raise the level of danger," Norville said. "Nothing in the report indicated a gun was needed for self-defense."

Channel 4 News spoke with the owner of the cab company, Paul Smith by phone. Smith said his drivers are prohibited from carrying guns.

He said if the investigation reveals Brown indeed had a gun inside the cab, he will be fired.

For now, the cab driver is still on the job.
