CARROLL COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - The mother of a newborn baby was killed in a mobile home fire early Monday morning after initially escaping the flames, and then returning to the home to retrieve items for the infant, according the Carroll County sheriff.

Emergency responders were notified about the fire in the 1400 block of Gilgal Road around 5 a.m. Monday. Sheriff Jamie Kinman said one family lived in two mobile homes that were connected by stairs. An older couple lived in one trailer. The victim, her boyfriend and their 4-month-old baby lived in the other trailer.

Kinman said everyone made it out safely, but the infant's mother ran back inside in an attempt to get clothes and bottles for the baby and never came back out.

Carroll County Coroner David Wilhoit said the victim was 37 years old. Her name has not yet been released. An autopsy will be performed on Tuesday.
