LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Rather than spending the day in school, a group of  Notre Dame Academy students instead received a real-life lesson in the gift of giving.

Along with chaperones, 47 Notre Dame Academy sixth-graders swarmed the Meijer store on Dixie Highway Wednesday morning. Having teamed with St. Vincent DePaul Society, the students spent the past week collecting money to buy Christmas gifts for less fortunate children.

"We're just trying to make a difference and shop for the kids that don't have that much," said Bryson Ritchie, 11.

The outing proved to be a reward experience packed with lessons, both figurative and literal. For starters, before the students could take part in the shopping excursion, they had to conduct a writing exercise.

"In English they have to write a persuasive letter," explained Margy Blair, sixth-grade science instructor at Notre Dame Academy.

"We sent them to our relatives and asked for money for [the children]," said Chris Nichols, 11.

Over the course of a week, Blair said the 47 students collected over $4,200 on their own.

"Meijer donated $300 on top of that, so it was about $4,500 - $4,600," said Blair. "We will be spending about $2,500 here today for these 20 children that we are buying for and then the rest of the money is going to Kosair Children's Hospital."

While the sixth-graders ultimately carried out the gift-giving, they did not leave from the experience empty handed.

"I think we all feel pretty good about this," said Bryson. "You know, it's just a good feeling."

"It'll help them have a better Christmas and maybe," began Chris, "a better life."

"It's much better to give than to receive," said Blair.

Items purchased by the students will collected by representatives from the Saint Vincent DePaul Society will collect the gifts purchased by the students Thursday.
